AMBULANCE - BBC ONE
Hurtling down the road in the back of an ambulance is a juggling act between adrenaline and nausea. I had to remain open to the fact that I might be filming with people on the worst day of their lives. In these situations, I was running a multi-cam rig, producing and managing ambulance crews, while also gaining access and self-shooting on prime lenses to capture coverage in life-or-death situations. As special thank you to the team at Dragonfly for the opportunity and learning.
I filmed with some incredible people during my time on Ambulance, notably Jess and Abi, who featured in Series 11: Episode 6, which I directed and edit produced with the very talented editor Ruari Muir. A day before Jess and I filmed together, her mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Despite this, she showed up ready to film and care for the people we met in the North West. This episode also covered the pay deal, which showed the ambulance workers accepting the offer on the 14th of April. At a time when the value of paramedics and NHS workers debate by detached politicians, Jess was doing her job and financially supporting her mum. You can see both Jess and Abi’s compassion and warmth on full display here.
Ambulance taught me many things, from shooting sequences in the back of a helicopter at a thousand feet to negotiating access with the family of a loved one who had sadly died. But perhaps most importantly, it taught me that despite challenging times, people want to be heard, and I'm proud to have been part of a great programme.
